More than just your ordinary Friday night in Tarzana, CHEVY METAL, the self-described “moldee-oldees” cover band, hit the ROCK AND ROLL PIZZA STAGE at the iconic CORBIN BOWL on Ventura Boulevard – and MAN, did they hit it HARD!
Chevy Metal, the now-infamous side project of drummer TAYLOR HAWKINS of the FOO FIGHTERS, still draws a crowd every time they book a show. In fact, this show’s 200ish tickets SOLD OUT in minutes after being announced! And why not! It’s FUN with a capital F-yeah! Home on a short break during the latest Foo tour (which is just about to fly off again to Australia), Hawkins stepped briefly away from his day job and got behind his other drum kit to jam with his other band mates – long-time buddy and super amazing vocalist/bassist WILEY HODGDEN and shredder BRENT WOODS (from Sebastian Bach’s band) – and put on a heart-pounding 90+minute set that included all the favorite covers the fans of Chevy Metal have come to love, plus a few new surprises (including an eight–song Queen set that knocked our socks off!). And once you’ve seen the band a few times, you might find yourself starting to hear Chevy Metal’s version of some of these classic songs whenever you hear the originals – they are THAT good.
And to add to the thrill, Twitter feeds began blowing up as the crowd was treated to some pretty cool guests, including singer LUKE SPILLER and guitarist ADAM SLACK of THE STRUTS, SEX PISTOLS guitarist and KLOS’s own noontime jock STEVE “JONESY” JONES, drummer, singer, and music engineer and producer extraordinaire JOHN “LOU” LOUSTEAU, and guitarist PAT SMEAR of the FOO FIGHTERS, who all sat in on several songs during the set.
Bonus: The show was made even better by a first-rate bar (thanks, Corbin Bowl) and LOTS of Rock and Roll Pizza to go around. Mmmmmm!!!!!!
What a perfect Friday night in Tarzana!
