ABOUT MIDNIGHT MISSION
Since 1914, The Midnight Mission has provided a myriad of services to the people of Skid Row and the greater Los Angeles area. Our objective is to work with homeless individuals and families to help remove obstacles to self-sufficiency, while ensuring that immediate needs like food, shelter, and clothing are met. We operate a drug and alcohol recovery program that offers a bridge to self-sufficiency through counseling, education, job training and placement. We also provide safe transitional housing to homeless families at our Family Housing Complex.
Our objective is to remove the obstacles for these homeless men, women and children who seek our support. Our services are made possible through the support of our generous donors.
1. Our stability and longevity - We have been in existence since 1914. Because we are privately funded, we have had the flexibility to adjust our services to the needs of the community. While early in our history our focus was on offering basic subsistence and helping people regain their health and well-being, recent efforts have focused on helping people obtain self sufficiency. We offer job training, education, subsistence abuse treatment, individual and group counseling, along with other needed services.
2. Innovation and relevance - We consistently adjust our services to meet the changing needs of the community that we serve. For example, when our research and experience showed that family homelessness was on the rise about 15 years ago, we created our Family Housing Program which is designed to remove the many obstacles that impoverished families face as they try to obtain self-sufficiency. Today it stands as a national model for transitional housing programs.
At our main location, in addition to hosting on one the largest Drug and Alcohol Programs for men in the region, we have put together and continuum of care that addresses everyday needs of people from a meal and hot shower to medical and housing referrals. We adhere to no religious or overarching philosophies we just want people to get better. Our services are available to all that need them at no cost to them.
3. Stewardship and Integrity - As a regional leader in the human services sector, we pride ourselves on maintaining relevant programs, transparent and responsible leadership and being an active community partner. Our fundraising cost is one the lowest among our peers. In fact, we have enjoyed the only Four Star rating among the largest providers of our type in the Los Angeles area by Charity Navigator (3rd year in roll!), the foremost national charity rating service.
4. Current Situation - The economy has made it more challenging to raise the funds necessary to keep up with the rising demand for our services. We have had to reduce staff and adjust our program offerings, so that we could focus our efforts on our core service philosophy moving people to self-sufficiency, free of government and social service assistance. We have had to do more with less and unfortunately, we dont believe that we have seen demand peak. We are reliant upon the community to make a difference in the lives of so many, so we encourage people to do what they can now and to get their peers and others involved in our cause.
